‘A’ Level in Business, a Student’s Perspective

Oxford Learning College Reviews – ‘A’ Level in Business, a Student’s Perspective

I’ve recently completed – as in, literally just finished the exams for – the Business A Level through Oxford Learning College. I’ve studied at home (Oxford Learning College is a remote learning facility, all of their students study at home for all of their courses) and I’ve been asked by the College to provide a review / overview of the course and how I found it.

Firstly, the course itself:-

It’s structured into four ‘themes’ (areas of study) and I had to sit 3 exams at the end. The first 2 Themes are pretty basic, I guess to develop our learning through building our knowledge of simple business concepts and applying them to business contexts. The final 2 Themes are more complex and required more time to study and more ‘thinking time’ to ensure all concepts were properly understood, as they require students to take a more strategic view of business opportunities and issues. I certainly learned to use an enquiring, critical and thoughtful approach to the study of business, to understand that business behaviour can be studied from a range of perspectives and to challenge assumptions.

Each of the themes are as follows:-

Theme 1 – Marketing and People

Theme 2 – Managing Business Activities

Theme 3 – Business Decisions and Strategy

Theme 4 – Global Business

Personally, I enjoyed the final theme – global business – the most, although I can see that everyone doing the course would have their own personal favourite.

Oxford Learning College’s A Level courses are eligible for UCAS points, which obviously influenced my decision to use this Learning Centre to study at. I’m a ‘mature’ (!!) student, working full-time at present, but the overall aim for me is to reduce my hours to part-time while I study at University for the degree I never got while I was younger.

I feel that this course will help me on my way. Not just from the UCAS points for completing it, but also from the discipline of studying, completing workbooks, completing topics and essays etc etc. As it’s been a while since I was at school, learning to study all over again has been a real experience and a real pleasure for me.

The course is well structured, well designed, and well put together. I got everything I needed out of it, and overall my experience using Oxford Learning College has been a very pleasant one. I hope this review helps others make their own minds up to use this College too, and wish you all the best of luck!
